Basic Realism in PaintBBS

objective of the tutorial:  show one way how to go about doing realism and shading

When practicing realism, it's almost a given to have photo reference.  Otherwise how else would you know if you are doing it right?  Comparing the photo reference with this particular practice doodle, it's obvious I didn't do it exactly.  I could have if I had taken the time but I wasn't in the mood.  :op

1.  Lately I've been starting off with a super quick sketch of the shape of the face and placement of the features.  You could take more time than me when doing this stage but it's all going to be covered up so I don't bother.

2.  Mask the sketch and build up the shading starting with the base color.  It's just to show you where the colors will be working. ^^

3.  Unmask the sketch and switch it to Watercolor.  Go over the sketch with the appropriate colors until they're gone.

4.  Start adding the bigger detailed elements like the eyes and lips.

5.  Add the base color for the hair.

6.  Build up the color in the hair starting with the color a couple shades lighter than the base color.  This is also when I smooth out the coloring on the face if I haven't done it enough prior.

7.  Add the highlights to the hair which are several shades lighter than the base and highlighting to the face if there is any.  You're done. :)
